What is an Assistive (Adaptive) Technology Device?

"any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the- shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities."

Assistive technology (AT) devices offer a variety of options for individuals with learning disabilities to access the post secondary curriculum; to compensate for reading, mathematics, and writing difficulties; and to improve their quality of life across the life span (Bryant & Bryant, 1998).

Technology can be either low tech or high tech.

“Leslie gives those in need of adaptive technology the knowledge and confidence to be successful through the use of the adaptive software she demonstrates and her consistent and unwavering commitment to help the students with disabilities.”

-Janice South-Valencia, 2004 Conestoga College General Business Graduate
